It’s a go! Razor clam dig on for Jan. 20-21

Today the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife approved next weekend’s clam dig for the Long Beach Peninsula after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat. No digging is allowed before noon each day, and diggers must take the first 15 clams they dig. The evening low tide Friday, Jan. 20 is at 4:28 p.m. (-0.5 feet) and on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 5:17 p.m. (-0.8 feet).

We have two vacation rental units available on the Klipsan Beach approach, a preferred area for razor clam digging. The upstairs sleeps six, and the downstairs sleeps four. Email us for more information.

The upstairs unit, which sleeps six, is available New Year’s weekend at #309 Historic Coast Guard Station. Stay a minimum of two nights, and pay no cleaning fee! Rates are $150 per night, plus tax. Regardless of the weather, it’s a great time to visit. When not storm-watching, families make use of the numerous movies, books and games available, all free of charge. The vacation rental is located right on the Klipsan Beach Approach, about half-way up the Peninsula, south of Ocean Park. The beach is located about a block and a half way, accessed on a paved road.

Thanksgiving’s just around the corner, and if you’re looking for a great place to gather the family together, Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula is perfect. Families can hike together to either North Head or Cape Dissappointent Lighthouses, or tour the museums and interpretive centers. Restaurants are abundant, and free community Thanksgiving meals are available.

Clam digging dates are tentative, based on upcoming marine toxin tests, but the Department of Fish and Wildlife has scheduled the following razor clam dig dates for November and December of 2011. Here are the proposed dates, along with low tides:

For those who wait until the crowds have gone, anticipating quiet walks on the beach or along forest trails, your time has come! While there are still some interesting festivals coming up on the Long Beach Peninsula, they tend to be calmer than the summer’s rowdier ones. Check our September 13 post for information on the Cranberrian Fair, the One Sky, One World Kite Celebration, the Water Music Festival, the Graveyard of the Pacific shipwreck events and the Wild Mushroom Celebration, which continues through November.
