Lewis & Clark, the Life Saving Service, Cranberry Harvesting, Sea Life, Lighthouses, Oyster Farming, Whale Watching and of course…the Beach!
For families who love to integrate learning into all they do, the Klipsan Beach Life Saving Station, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is ideal. Hosted by a homeschooling family, vacation units are supplied with a selection of books, games, puzzles, movies and even lesson plans that complement the activities and experiences available to families visiting Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula. Scavenger hunts, treasure chests and crafts
A scavenger hunt, complete with treasure chest prizes, sends kids looking for shells and driftwood, exploring a pioneer cemetery, posing for photos with Lewis and Clark statues and more. For families who come during rainy weeks, craft materials are available. Also available is a free downloadable copy of the interactive Booklet of Discovery, created by a member of the host family.
Lewis & Clark
Located at the end of Lewis and Clark’s journey, the Long Beach Peninsula and surrounding areas are ripe with opportunities to learn about this incredible historic venture. From statues, trails and an Interpretive Center on the Peninsula to salt fields and Fort Clatsop just over the Astoria bridge, a family could fill an entire week following the adventures of Lewis and Clark.
History, Harvesting & Whale Watching
For those wanting to learn about agriculture, what could be more interesting than the flooding of fields and the harvesting of cranberries? Whether families come in October to watch the harvesting, or at other seasons, there is plenty to learn by visiting fields and the free Cranberry Museum.
Topping off the list of local learning opportunities are oyster farming, peninsula history, sea life, lighthouses, whale-watching and more. Click here for localized lesson plans.
Because Klipsan Beach Life Saving Station is located in a safe environment, families can feel comfortable staying the week when one parent has to return to work. The grounds are fully fenced, and the host family resides on the premises.
