Grades: Adaptable for K-12

Subject: Cranberry Growing and Harvesting

Objectives:

Harvesting at the Long Beach Cranberry Bog

1. Learn what it takes to grow cranberries on the Peninsula.

2. Learn the two major methods of growing and harvesting cranberries.

3. Learn about the different varieties of cranberries.

Activities:

1. Visit the Cranberry Museum, open for most of the year. (Outdoor exhibits open year-round.) Walk the fields, identifying different varieties of cranberries. Click here for the Museum’s Web site. Museum is free; donations accepted.

2. Drive to some of the local cranberry bogs, observing the harvest if your visit is during the fall.

3. Choose a recipe that uses cranberries and make it.

Required Reading:

Read one or more of the following books, depending on grade level. All are available in the upstairs unit, starred ones in downstairs unit.
