Klipsan Beach Life Saving Station–Local Lesson Plans for Guests
Grades: Adaptable for K-12

Subject: U. S. Life Saving Service

Objectives:

1. Learn why the U. S. Life Saving Service was created.

2. Discover how the Service made a difference in the lives of mariners, citing at least two major shipwrecks where they made a rescue.

3. Be able to explain how the Coast Guard came into existence.

Activities:

1. Read about the history of the Klipsan Beach Life Saving Station, either online or in the unit’s “Welcome” book.

2. Watch the video about the Life Saving Service (available in upstairs unit).

3. Watch at least one video chronicling a shipwreck (several videos in each unit).

4. Visit the Pacific Heritage museum in Ilwaco, noting in particular the section with artifacts from local Life Saving Stations. The museum is free on Thursdays.

5. Visit the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, paying particular attention to the Life Saving Service displays.

6. Find a least one item from a shipwreck at Marsh’s Free Museum.

Required Reading:

Read one or more of the following books, depending on grade level. All are available in the upstairs unit, starred ones in downstairs unit.
